GICs (Guaranteed Investment Certificates) are a more "conservative" form of investment. Interest rates are guaranteed but such rates are often lower than what could be expected out of more aggressive forms of investment. GICs often require the investor to lock the investment in for a specified period of time. For investors wishing to use their money for a specific purpose within at a certain point in the near future, such as purchasing a house, taking a vacation, or going back to school, GICs may be useful as a fairly safe, interest earning investment.

Below are links to several GIC providers, including such major Canadian financial institutions as Scotiabank, TD Canada Trust, the Bank of Montreal (BMO), the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), the Canadian Imperial Bank of Canada (CIBC), and ING Direct.
