Car Rentals
The following links are to car rental companies and to car sharing services within Canada. Different rental companies have different rates, and often vary their rates based on the type of vehicle being rented, the day of the week, the time of year, and the length of the trip, just to mention a few variables. Additional insurance is typically offered for vehicle rentals. It is worth noting that such insurance may, in some cases, be very limited in its actual coverage despite the impression the salesperson may give to the contrary. While your circumstances may be such that it is prudent to purchase such additional coverage, as a buyer you should certainly be aware of the possible limits of any such insurance policy for additional coverage.
Information Prior to Travelling
If you are considering international travel, you should plan ahead. Determine in advance whether you will require a Canadian passport or perhaps some other form of identification to enter your destination country and any other countries that you may have to travel to in order to get to and from your destination country. You may wish to consult with the foreign embassies and consulates of these countries to determine what their requirements are.
If you require a passport, make sure that you apply for your passport well in advance of your trip. If you have an existing passport, make sure that it is current and that it will not expire during your trip. Some countries require that your passport must not be set to expire within some set period of time after your arrival in the destination country, such as, for example six months after arrival. You should also make sure that your passport has not been damaged, and if it has been damaged you should take steps to have it replaced by Passport Canada. Water damage to a passport may result in a person being denied entry to a foreign country even if the passport is perfectly legible.
If you are taking a minor child out of the country, you should obtain the written and notarized consent of any parent who will not be travelling with the child. If you are planning on getting married in a foreign country, check with the applicable foreign embassy or consulate on that country's marriage requirements before making your trip. Find out at least two months in advance (6 to 8 weeks) whether you will require vaccinations or other medical treatment prior to travelling. Finally, if you are planning a trip to a foreign country, determine in advance the location of the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate.
